Artist Statement:
Katie Kraemer documents the fleeting emotions and moments that capture the beauty and tragedy of being alive. Kraemer wants to experience everything that being human has to offer, and selfishly capture it and share it with the world. Photography allows them to prolong those moments enough to share them. Their practice allows them to work in fine art and the commercial field, their passion for documenting a beautiful moment helps them excel in meeting client needs. Whether that means engagement photos, family reunions, or an accomplishment worth celebrating, Kraemer is dedicated to helping their clients hold on to their memory forever.
Kraemer’s art can be motivated by a sense of awe, like the striking colors captured by William Eggleston, which teach them to pause and see the magic gifted to us by nature. More often than not though, they drift between the childlike wonder, and a painful awareness in their photographs. The raw experiences depicted in Nan Goldin’s work, the discomfort of looking into someone's private life and emotions; and the hypnotic pull from the photographs by Sanders Coers call to them during waves of nostalgia and reflection. There are emotions and moments so strong that words do not possess the ability to properly express.
Photography gives Kraemer the freedom they need to seek out meaning. Having the ability to always create artwork is crucial to their work. Feelings and experiences cannot accurately be depicted if they are not physically there. Kraemer constantly takes photographs of anything that stirs strong emotions in them. When Kraemer creates photographs, they focus on the gut feeling of the meaning they are trying to express through image. Through that process of sitting with and dissecting those feelings, they can manufacture a scene that replicates them. In their commercial work, while replication is not possible, they seek out scenes of strong emotion and take hundreds of photos which will inevitably capture that perfect candid moment. They are dedicated to the whole experience, not simply a posed family photo, but the smiles and laughs when a subject isn't worried about the camera. For Kraemer, the camera operates as an extension of themself, the camera should see all the details that the artist sees, and prolong them forever in an image.
